Cost of missed instalments

Tax instalments are not legally required — you can choose not to make them. However, the CRA charges daily compound interest at the prescribed rate on any unpaid balance, starting from the original due date until the balance is paid in full. This interest is non-deductible. Use the calculator below to estimate the cost of skipping or delaying an instalment.

$
%
Days late
Accrued interest $0.00
Total to pay $0.00
Equivalent simple rate

Calculation uses daily compound interest: Interest = Principal × ((1 + r ÷ 365)days − 1). The CRA prescribed rate for overdue tax has historically ranged from 5% to 10%. Confirm the current rate at canada.ca before relying on the estimate.
