Cost of missed instalments
Instalments are required once the thresholds are met — there’s no separate form to file, but skipping them isn’t free. The CRA charges daily compound interest at the prescribed rate on any unpaid balance, starting from the original due date until the balance is paid in full. This interest is non-deductible. Use the calculator below to estimate the cost of skipping or delaying an instalment.
Calculation uses daily compound interest: Interest = Principal × ((1 + r ÷ 365)days − 1). The CRA prescribed rate for overdue tax has historically ranged from 5% to 10%. Confirm the current rate at canada.ca before relying on the estimate. Every rate and threshold we use, with its source →
